the tall boot

Tall leather boots have been the foundation of my fall wardrobe for a couple years now and they’re still going strong. Now I’m sharing a round up of tall boots I recommend. A few are from my own personal wishlist, and a few are tried and true boots I own and can therefore vouch for their comfort & quality. Props to those brands doing repeat styles season after season for those of us who missed out the first time around and those of us who resent being made to feel our shoes are outdated after a season or two. Seventies and equestrian styles are the most timeless in my opinion. But I included some wild cards in case you want to make a more adventurous purchase. My favorite way to wear a tall boot is with a midi dress, midi skirt, or culottes. I also love to see a tall boot styled with knee length wide fit shorts, cropped pants and, in come instances, a legging or short skirt - on other people, not me. Many of these boots are available in a variety of colors and textures so be sure to click around on the links to find the perfect boot for you.

The Donna boots by LOQ are my most frequently worn boots. They are super comfortable and easy to walk in. I like that they aren’t a bright white - more of a very pale grey - so they go with almost everything. Since I’m not a fan of a stacked or contrasting heel, I appreciate the leather-covered heel as well as the fact that they brand has reissued this style for several seasons so they don’t feel dated after a year. The Donna is also available in black and dark brown.

Another style reissued for several seasons now is the Gia by Loeffler Randall. These are similar to the LOQ boots but with a slightly slimmer shaft. These are a classic style which feels like perfect vintage boot from the 70’s. They come in black or cognac. Loeffler Randall also offers Goldie, a version with a higher heel , available in 4 colors.

Another boot that checks all the “solid investment” boxes is Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s Lune boot. It seems like it is mostly sold out in all of its many colors and prints. Check The Real Real or check back in a few months in case the 2021 versions are delayed due to supply chain issues. Or check out MNZ’s new Norfolk boot which is arriving iin stores currently.

Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s Norfolk boot has a slightly more western vibe but it is still classic and not trendy. In other words, you won’t look back at old photos of yourself wearing this boot and be embarrassed. Even though I usually like a matching heel, I think this black sole and heel works really well. I’ve shown them here in a beautiful brown called Cedar but keep scrolling down for other colors.

If you’re more of a Sixties fan, you’ll love the Edie boot from By Far. I have worn many of By Far’s super soft leather shoes and can assure you they’re easy on the feet. Edie’s lower heel height would pair well with shorter skirts as well as midi skirts, and cropped pants. These are available in 9 colors and textures including lavender and embossed croc.

Speaking of eras, this pointier toe and heel could allude to the best of the 80’s or the naughty aughts. Definitely not as comfy for walking but smart-sexy and not not timeless. You can find them in just about every shade and texture of neutral leather you can imagine.

I love the elegant and classic look of a riding boot. This dark brown Khaite boot would pair so nicely with midi dresses and skirts. Unless you’re really wearing them to go riding, tucking pants can make one look like a character in a costume drama. These also come in black.

And this Jil Sander flat boot in ivory is absolutely exquisite. It is also available in black. Tough choice but you really can’t go wrong.

I am still not sure if I’m a Tabi boot person even though I like them on other people. If I were to decide in favor of adding a Tabi to my shoe collection it would be this knee high dark brown version. That would feel most honest to me.

In addition to split-toe adventures, you may like to a boot in an unexpected color such as the Norfolk in Laurel.

For a more budget friendly boot from an independent designer, check out Intentionally Blank’s Pam boot. They’re under $300 and come in a variety of colors.

A really cute new tall boot with a younger, more contemporary design just came down the pike from Labucq. It’s called the Joan and it is the perfect mash up of low block heel and a bold square toe with a slightly 90’s feel.

Too few brands are producing quality boots in extended sizing. If you are looking for a boot with a wider fitting shaft, maybe get on the waitlist for a pair by Good American.

Is there a such thing as a year-long impulse buy? Apparently so. These aren’t exactly a timeless classic but I’ve been checking the Nanushka website once a week for several months now in the hopes these macrame boots will be available for purchase. Maybe I’m rationalizing with high hopes for cost-per-wear, but I think, since it almost never rains in LA, I’d wear these year round.
