fluffing the nest

We have been in our new home for a year and one month, furnishing at a deliberately slow pace, only bringing in very considered pieces, ensuring we make the best use of space and bring a sense of calm, comfort and beauty to our everyday living. As we continue to fluff our nest, I will share new additions here on The Sort, my little off-Instagram sanctuary.

We finally pulled the trigger on a three key pieces - a set of accent chairs, a coffee table, and a lamp. We searched high and low for an affordable vintage Alky chair in pristine condition, to no avail. After exhausting all avenues, we went with a reproduction of the Groovy Chair in lamb wool. In keeping with our cloudlike design theme, they are super soft, comfortable and light enough to easily move around. We have one in the bedroom and one in the living room. To offset the karmic debt of buying the furniture equivalent of fast fashion, the next major purchases were from local or independent artists, creators and designers. First, a custom coffee table from Ombia Studio, made in Los Angeles by sculptor Cristina Moreno. After I fell in love with Ombia’s slab side tables, we commissioned a coffee-table sized version. It completes the living room perfectly and we couldn’t be happier with it. The lamp is designed by Humanhome, also based right here in LA. Their Lynea lamp has a sleek and clean design which hides the chords without requiring going into the wall. Genius! This is the lamp for us because we strongly dislike seeing chords.

There hasn’t been much entertaining happeing in the new place so far, but when I cooked for a friend recently, I came up short on serveware. I can be the hostess with the mostest next time, now that I have an elegant oval platter large enough for a whole branzino or a 7 bone tomahawk, and a one-of-a-kind ceramic serving spoon handmade by Nicola Moore. Until the next dinner party, the charcoal grey platter is the centerpiece of my dining table holding a bounty of fresh fruit and the spoon sits out on my countertop so I can use it as a spoonrest.

Finally, Django, who has become a burrower in his elder years, now has his own cocoon-shaped bed made of beige felted wool, which is a million times more chic than any pet bed I’ve ever seen. He looks like Baby Yoda when he’s curled up inside.
